Power Market Update | 12.18.2024

The Northern tier of the U.S. prepares for a brief cold snap that is very likely to bring elevated spot gas and power prices before mild temperatures return to end 2024.

**The Weekly U.S. Power Market Update video will be taking a break for the holidays and will return after the New Year. From everyone at The Energy Buyer’s Guide, we wish you a very happy holiday season and a prosperous New Year.

The Northern U.S. is expected to see very cold temperatures over the coming weekend with overnight lows forecast to dip into single digits across part of the Northern Plains and New England.

This cold snap is expected to be short-lived, however, with very mild temperatures expected to return to finish out the month.

Dunkelflaute (German for “Dark Lull”) is a period of time when wind and solar generation is limited due to no wind or sunlight. These periods have been a topic of recent discussion in Europe as the continent has undergone multiple such events in the past few months.

This paper from The Oxford Institute for Energy Studies examines the impact of periods of low renewables output on natural gas demand volatility as gas-fired generators are often the backup generation during these lulls.
