The U.S. Energy Information Administration reported a weekly injection of 9 Billion Cubic Feet (Bcf) in Lower 48 natural gas storage inventories for the week ending March 14, 2025 (Link). Total inventories now stand at 1,707 Bcf, 624 Bcf (26.8%) below year-ago levels and 190 Bcf (10.0%) below the 2020-2024 average for the same week.
Natural gas storage inventories posted a net injection of 9 Bcf during the week ended March 14. While not unprecedented, net injections are rare at this point in the season. Last year’s report that covered the week ended March 15, 2024 showed a net build of 7 Bcf, and the week ended March 16, 2012 recorded an injection of 11 Bcf. Otherwise, March injections typically occur later in the month when normal temperatures are higher.
In any case, the rare first-half-of-March build was mostly due to exceptionally mild weather across key population centers during the report week. The build narrowed storage deficit to last year by just 2 Bcf but took a more significant chunk out of the five-year average deficit, as that benchmark posted a decline of 31 Bcf during the same week.
