The weekly addition into natural gas storage reported today landed in line with consensus expectations as market participants had been looking for a larger-than-normal build resulting from widespread mild temperatures that weighed on natural gas demand for power generation during the report week. The reported 56-Bcf build highlighted the role heat plays in driving natural gas demand during summer, especially when contrasted with the previous week’s paltry 7-Bcf injection that coincided with intense heat across major population centers. The outsized build reported today helped to narrow the deficit to year-ago levels to only 79 Bcf, the closest 2025 inventories have been to the corresponding week in 2024 since January. The surplus to the five-year average for the same week increased and is also at a level last seen in January.
