The U.S. Energy Information Administration reported a weekly injection of 122 Billion Cubic Feet (Bcf) in Lower 48 natural gas storage inventories for the week ending May 30, 2025 (Link). Total inventories now stand at 2,598 Bcf, 288 Bcf (10.0%) below year-ago levels and 117 Bcf (4.7%) above the 2020-2024 average for the same week.
The EIA’s storage build for the final week of May was bearish by any measure. The 122-Bcf addition to underground inventories was the largest so far this season and extended the streak of triple-digit builds to six consecutive weeks. The build came in much stronger than the five-year average and year-ago benchmark of 98 Bcf and 94 Bcf, respectively. The deficit to year-ago storage levels is now less than half of its early March level, while the surplus to the five-year average is the strongest since December.
