Nearby natural gas futures rebounded on Friday, gaining back the previous day’s losses. The October 2026 NYMEX contract pushed closer to $3.00 per MMBtu, but resistance continued to keep pricing contained even as near-term heat supported the front of the curve. October added 6 cents to finish Friday near $2.98 per MMBtu, up $0.09 on the week. Winter 2026-27 added 2 cents and ended the week flat near $3.40 per MMBtu.
Widespread heat has kept power generation demand propped up into early September, with volumes remaining close to 50 Bcf per day and well above year-ago levels. This is working to stunt storage growth during a period when injections are typically more robust. Temperature forecasts show warmer-than-normal anomalies persisting through at least mid-month, but the intensity of the heat in most markets should subside from here, allowing gas consumption to begin relaxing.
