Natural gas futures finished modestly higher on Wednesday, with prices finishing well off of intraday highs. September climbed to roughly $2.88 per MMBtu before giving back much of the advance into the close, ultimately settling at $2.81, up $0.04 on the day. Winter 2026–27 gained just $0.01 to $3.41, while the remainder of the curve was essentially unchanged. Despite the recent stabilization at the front of the curve, winter pricing remains $0.10 lower over the past week and $0.11 lower over the past month.
The inability to sustain the earlier rally continues to highlight the market’s reluctance to build much upside momentum despite supportive late-summer demand. Near-term heat remains a source of strength, but healthy storage inventories and strong production continue to limit the market’s response as the cooling season winds down. With the fall shoulder season approaching, the continued weakness in Winter 2026–27 remains notable, particularly as the strip has failed to participate meaningfully in the recent recovery at the front of the curve.
