Natural Gas Market Note | 08.18.2026
Prices recover as near-term weather remains supportive.
Natural gas futures moved higher Tuesday, with the strongest gains concentrated at the front of the curve. September 2026 added $0.09 to settle near $2.78 per MMBtu, while the Winter 2026–27 strip gained $0.05 to $3.40. Despite today’s rebound, winter pricing remains notably weaker over the broader period, down $0.11 over the past week and $0.14 over the past month. Further out, the curve was comparatively steady, with Calendar 2027 gaining $0.03 on the day but still sitting $0.04 below last week.
The move gains back some of the recent selloff, but it does little to change the broader trend. Near-term pricing has found support below $2.70 as lingering late-summer cooling demand keeps some pressure on the supply-and-demand balance, while the market continues to discount winter risk against a backdrop of healthy inventories and improving production. With the Winter 2026–27 strip still hovering near recent four-year lows, the market continues to show considerably more concern about near-term weather than about tightening conditions later this year.
