Natural Gas Market Note | 08.17.2026
Futures give up ground as growing production weighs on the curve.
Natural gas futures started the week under renewed selling pressure, with weakness most pronounced across the upcoming winter. September 2026 fell $0.04 to $2.69 per MMBtu and is now down $0.10 over the past week, while Winter 2026–27 declined another $0.06 to $3.36. The winter strip has shed $0.16 over the past week and traded to fresh four-year lows today. By comparison, losses remain relatively modest further out the curve, reinforcing that the current selloff is increasingly concentrated around the near-term supply outlook.
Lingering heat across the southern U.S. and recovering LNG feedgas demand continue to provide some support, but they have not been enough to overcome high production and comfortable inventories. With less cooling season remaining for weather to meaningfully tighten balances, the market continues to discount the risk of adequate supply heading into winter, putting disproportionate pressure on Winter 2026–27 pricing.
