Natural Gas Market Note | 08.10.2026
Futures finish higher for second straight day on forecasts for extended heat.
Natural gas prices started the week on a strong note, with the September 2026 contract posting a 13-cent gain. This represents the largest single-day increase for a prompt-month natural gas contract since May. September ended the day near $2.79 per MMBtu, roughly flat compared to week-ago levels but still down considerably over the past month. Gains were slightly less pronounced further out the curve, with Winter 2026–27 climbing $0.08 to finish near $3.52 per MMBtu and Summer 2027 rising just $0.03 on the day.
Weekend revisions to temperature forecasts showed prolonged intense heat across Texas and the Southeast. The Northeast and Midwest are expected to see temperatures normalize in the coming days, but lingering heat across the southern tier of the country should help support natural gas demand from power generators deep into August. Expectations for stronger consumption in the coming weeks, along with a recovery in LNG feedgas demand, have helped offset an uptick in domestic production and lift prices from recent lows.
