Natural Gas Market Note | 07.21.2026
Prices recover early losses to finish nearly unchanged.
Natural gas futures finished nearly unchanged on Tuesday following a quiet and largely directionless trading session. Prices started modestly lower before recovering throughout the trading day, leaving most contracts within a penny or two of yesterday’s settlement. The August 2026 contract gained 1 cent to finish at $2.87 per MMBtu, while Winter 2026–27 also added 1 cent to settle at $3.53 per MMBtu. Despite the muted daily move, the front of the curve remains roughly 40 cents lower than one month ago.
Weather forecasts were also mostly unchanged, giving the market little fresh fundamental direction. Near-term heat remains insufficient to materially alter expectations for natural gas-fired generation, while the broader outlook continues to favor generally manageable summer demand. With mixed fundamentals and rangebound trading, the path of least resistance again looks to be sideways for natural gas futures.
